Top items to splurge on in January...
Winter Apparel: Most retailers are clearing out the shelves to make room for spring inventory, so you can be sure to find winter apparel offered at deep discounts. This year is no exception, with winter merchandise already marked down 70% in many stores. This is a great time to buy your kids outerwear for next year! It’s the time I buy my kids back-to-school clothing and shoes and put them away until September. Plus, be sure to stack those coupons onto the sales to get the best deal!
Seasonal Merchandise: The holidays are officially over, and retailers are offering up to 90% off holiday decor, greeting cards, wrapping paper and food items. January is the perfect time to buy that artificial Christmas tree or wreath for next year! You can even find seasonal candy, baking products and kitchen items – even toys – at deep discounts.
Linens and Bedding: Since the very first “white sale” back in 1878, January has historically been the best month to buy bedding, towels and other linens. Almost every big retailer offers the January White Sale, so be on the lookout for linens marked down as much as 70% as retailers make room for new spring inventory.
Organizing Supplies: After the chaos of the holidays, consumers are looking to neaten things up, so January is the ideal time to purchase discounted organizing supplies. Be on the lookout for storage solutions for your holiday decor, dishes, closets, garage and more. While I don’t believe you’ll find huge savings on these things, rarely will you find organizing supplies on sale other than during the month of January.
Jewelry: The holiday jewelry deals continue through January, as jewelry retailers look to dump inventory to make room for new Valentine’s Day merchandise. If you’re smart, you’ll look to buy your Valentine’s Day (or birthday or anniversary) jewelry gifts in January! It may not be the latest style, but good jewelry is timeless, right? (note to husband – go buy jewelry now!). Just be sure to make your purchases before February 1st when prices will go up for the Valentine’s Day retail push.
Furniture: Most furniture companies roll out new inventory in February and March, so January is the optimum time to score some furniture deals. Bring in your negotiating skills because furniture retailers will be in the mood to bargain as the look to clear their furniture showrooms.
HDTVs & Home Theater Gear: Didn’t get your giant HDTV for Christmas? No worries because you’ll find TVs as well as home theatre gear on sale right through to the Super Bowl.
Gift Cards: While it’s hard to imagine, millions of folks got gift cards over the holidays that they don’t want! These persnickety people are going to unload their unwanted gift cards for cash on gift card exchange sites like Plastic Jungle. You can also find gift cards on Ebay, but I’m often amazed at how many gift cards are sold for more than the price of the gift card itself. Now who on earth would buy a $50 Walmart gift card for $55? Doesn’t make sense to me. Well, as the comedian Ron White says, you can’t fix stupid.
Video Games and Other Electronics: Video game and other electronic deals are still going strong in January as retailers look to unload inventory to make room for the latest video game crazes. I think you’ll find especially good deals on iPads and tablets this January and into February. Be sure to head over to Amazon to find some good deals!
Patio Furniture and Grills: The spring merchandise is already out at many stores, and we’re seeing lots of outdoor gear like patio furniture and grills on sale. Stores tend to not hold too much inventory on these things, so if you wait until spring it may be slim pickings.
January is also a great time to purchase a last minute vacation (if you have the money!). There are a lot of getaway deals out there for sure. Also, if you’re in the home buying market, now is definitely the time to buy. Why? Because nobody else is.
So what are YOU buying this January?
